Description

Just as the Egyptian godess Sachmet always wins, as it turns out, so does our boat. Sachmet is the first yacht of our mini fleet – I brought it from Lelystad in the Netherlands to Greece in the summer of 2008, where I sailed her privately. See my Diaries of sailing Sachmet for some of her earlier adventures.

Sachmet was built by the reliable shipbuilding company Jeanneau in 1976 under the designation Folie Douce, which means crazy sweet. Well, definitely the foolishness fits.

Sachmet’s vintage means on the one hand she is less spacious than her younger siblings, but on the other, she is tremendously reliable and safe. She was built before thin laminate manufacturing techniques were developed, so the ships were built solid and strong to withstand the bad weather. Have a look at the crash test to see just how sturdy these boats are.

Indeed, Sachmet has endured many weather trails from Holland to Turkey, consistently proving that, although small, she is reliable and durable.

In 2013, we bought her a new engine so that the good old engine (lovingly named The Kraken) would roar no more, and we also replaced the main sail, so now she flies like a dragon. In winter 2016, she was completely refurbished. She got a new sprayhood, mattresses, pressurized water, much-desired shower, and a larger fridge. So now Sachmet looks as good as she sails.

Plus – she’s not just a dwelling, but a semi-racing ship, check out her regatta record!

Sachmet offers a total of 6 berths: a separate front cabin (2 berths), a lounge (1 fixed bed plus a double sofa bed) and a so-called “mouse hole” – a captain’s berth under the cockpit opposite the kitchen - howeve, you will be most comfortable in just 2 or 3 people or as a family with kids.

The kitchen is fully equipped and has a double hob, small fridge, all utensils, and a refrigerator. There is a small toilet with a hand pump in the heads, and for bathing a mini shower in the cockpit. The yacht has pressurized water. She may not be the height of luxury, but for a small family or 2 couples, she is cool.

She has a full reef main sail , folding into a lazy bag. Furling Genoa, Garmin GPS on board, depth gauge, speedometer, no autopilot, VHF with DSC, EPIRB. Tiller control. Fuel tank 80 l, water tanks 1 x 120 l. Life preserver, vests, safety harnesses. Separate leisure and engine batteries. Pillows, blankets and sheets are included.

Sachmet / Sekhmet - meaning:

The name of the ancient Egyptian goddess Sachmet (Sekhmet) means Mighty. Said to be the daughter of Sun god Ra, she can turn into a hot desert wind in an instant. Portrayed as a woman with a lion’s head in a red robe, she is a champion of justice and a patron of healers.

The legend goes that when the ancient Egyptians wanted to tame the lioness, godess of war for justice, they performed an interesting ritual: dancing and performing music, they offered a sacrificial drink colored by red berries to trick Sekhmet in to thinking she was drinking blood of her enemies… while she was actually drinking black Egyptian beer. Fortunately, Sachmet was a gentle drunk, and finally stopped fighting and became a cat Bastet, godess and protector of the home.

Our Sachmet also has a brave heart of a lioness, but she is the smallest from our fleet and my personal favourite, so be gentle with her as you would be with a kitten :-)
